ABSTRACT: During October and November 1935, a series of special inquiries was conducted in a group of western and southwestern states to study the condition of cases closed from the relief rolls in anticipation of the Works Program and in accordance with the policy of transferring unemployable cases from Federal to local care. This group of studies was planned to supplement the information obtained from earlier inquiries in to the results of administrative closings in Georgia. The second series of studies was carried out in much the same manner as the Georgia studies. The cities chosen were Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Little Rock, Arkansas; the rural areas included Custer, Corson, Hand, and Hutchinson Counties in South Dakota and Kit Carson and Weld Counties in Colorado.
