ABSTRACT: This report is the result of research performed in consideration of appointing an Assistant Research Director to the staff of the Federal Reserve Board. Theodore W. Schultz surveyed 8 of the 12 Federal Reserve banks in August of 1943 to understand the purpose and merit of research being done within the Federal Reserve and define major research fields essential to district banks. The survey also focused on the skills of research personnel, whether the number of competent economists within the banks was adequate, and whether efforts were being made to assist research professionals in their development. Finally, the survey evaluated the organization and management of research departments within Federal Reserve banks.
