- ROOM 4-1434 T H E WO R K S ---------- PROGRAM --Works Progress Administration-For Releaee to Morning Newspapers Sunday, February 7, 1937. ~ WPA Surveys Ages of Workers from Relief Rolls. Administrator Harry L. Hopkins today released a survey of the ages of more than 2,000,000 workers from relief rolls employed on the Works Progress Administration program. The findings, based on June, 1936, records, show nearly half (48 per cent) of the workers to be between 25 and 44 years of age. About 35 out of every 100 workers were between the ages of 45 and 65 and three out of every 100 were over 65 years old. Almost 14 per cent were between 16 and 25. Employes on National Youth Administration projects were not included in the report. The study showed about 1,665,000, or more than four-fifths of the employees were men. All WPA workers in the continental United States, with the exception of those in New York City, were included in tlIB survey. 11 It is noteworthy," Mr. Hopkins observed, 11 that the dispA.rity between the proportions of men and women from relief rolls is higher in the gr oups of older workers. Among those in the 1 45-and over 1 group 1 561,640 out of a total of 654,357, or nearly 86 per cent, were men. Almost 39 per cent of a\1 men classified by ages were in this group and about 32 per cent of the women were of these ages. While 3.2 per cent of the men were 65 or older, only 2.0 per cent of the women were 65 and. over. Women were also proportionately more numerous in Of all the women employod, 16.9 per cent were report ed as unde r 25 yoars of age, as against 13.3.per cent of the men. "Proportions of persons in each age group varied considerably from State to Stat e . In eight States, over 45 per cent of the men were 45 years or older. Among these Nevada was outstanding with 63.3 pe r cent of the men in this group. In two Stat e s, Kentucky and New Mexico less than 30 per cent of the men were in this old.er age g-oup. 11 Young men, 25 years and under, were proportionately most numerous in South Carolina, where 21.1 pe r cent of the total were in this group, while Nevada with only 6.2 per cent had the sma llest proportion of young men. In three Stat e s 55.0 per cent or more of the men were between the ages of 25 to 44; in four other States less than 40 per cent of the men were of these ages. 11 In each of ten Stat e s women 45 yea.rs of age and older constituted 40 per cent or more of all the women at work. In three other Stat e s, Georgia, New Mexico, and MaryJ.and, only a fourth of the women were of these ages. 11 ~Ago of all workers, and of men and women s eparately, are shown for the United.
