Proj ec t s , announced today.
}tr . Hunter said t hat 63 new proj ects , wi t h an aggregate cost in

WPA funds of $12 ,683 ,677, were given final a,ppr oval during the t wo-week
period ending November 15.

This brought to $107, 884 ,034 the grand total of

W'PA na t ional defense projects approved since the beginning of t he fiscal
year on July 1.
rationa l defense project s , he said, now accounting for ap:proximat e ly t went y percent of t he entire W.PA pr ogrnm, tD.lrn pr ecedence over all
other types of pr oj ects .

Most are placed in operation within thirty days

after t heir appr oval in Washington.
Included in the latest group of approvals i s a s i ngle project
sponsored by t he Nati onal Defense Commission totaling $5 , 820 , 000 .

This is

primarily for the employment of WPA white collar workers on a variety of
clerical and statist ical undertakings essential to the defense program.

It

wi ll oper ate on a nati on- wide basis and furnish employment for an average of
5 , 563 persons over a period of twelve mont hs .

It is one of t he lar ges t

singl e projects approved by WPA under t he defense program, Mr. Hunter said.
Of the remair:ing total of projects npproved during the first t wo
weeks in t he month , $3 ,020 , 336 worth are sponsored by the

by the air detachment a.t Fort Knox, Kentucky , streets ancl roads , undergr ound
u t ility lines , gasoline storage tanks and other facilities will be built

under a $420 , 170 project .

Studies and experiments in the art of camouflage and tho conduct
of blackouts will be concluctod by WPA workers in lfassachusetts under an
.Army-sponsored project for $261 , 838 •

and photogra~hing, camouflaging, and rephotographing those installations
from a prope~ proportional hei ght with a view tow~rds devising metho ds for
concealing such installations from aerial observation •

The City of Salinas , California, is sponsoring a $310, 630 projec t

for tho cons t ruction of a now airport , while the Wisconsin Nn.tional Guard
i s sponsor for a $254 , 609 project for the construction of n.n armory, hangar
and. now ru.nways nt the Milwaukee County Airport .
Of t hree projects sponsored by the Navy , tho lar ges t is for tho
construction of a Naval and Marine Corps Armory at Los Angeles , California.
The cost in WPJ. fu..'1.ds will be $255 , 549 .
A group of five engineering survey projects sponsored by the
Army nnd ag 5regating $201 , 555 in WP.A. funds is a lso included in the group of
proj ects approved during the first two weeks of t he month.

Two of those

aro for tl10 preparation of topographical and tactical maps required for
military maneuvers and artillery fire control.

Two are general engineering
