sibility at the end of 1938 to the amount of $500 , 000 for publication costs of
books published or in pr eparation "by the Federal Writ ers ' Project of the Works
Progress Ad.i11inistrati on , it was e.nn0unced today .
These f i gure s were revealed in a r epo rt I!l.ade by Henry G. Alsb erg, nati onal
director of the pr o ject , to Hrs . Florence Kerr, Assistant Administrator in charge
of the Women 1 s and Professional Divisi on .
The American G,1id.e Seri es , gene ral title of the guidebooks written by the
pr?ject , already numbers more t han 170 pablicati ons .

As sponsors for these bo oks ,

cf publicatio!l.
I n addition , spo nsorshi p arranr;ements have been made f or 476 books new
in preparation.
Guide s t o the i r states have been sponsored by the Governors of Connecticut ,
New Hampshire , I llinoi s , I ndiana , Virgini a , and Alo.s ka; and the Li eut enant
Governor of Delaware spo nsored the guide to that State .
Among the other sponsors ar e six secretari e s of stat e , one state librarian ,
35 state age!lcies , 1 7 ~ayors and city managers , 61 state departments , 33 chambers

of commerce , four women 1 s clubs , 14 colleges and ID1iversiti e s , 31 state and local
historical societies , and 48 other groups and committees , including the New York
World 1 s Fair , nn American Legion Post and the military department of the Stat e of
Kentucky .
The books are published at no cost t o the government , and in many cases
publishers h~ve agreed to po;y royalties on the books .

These royalties are used

either to defray non- labor costs of the project , or turned over to the United
States Treasury.
