H .U+ 2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) March 30, 1949 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks i n leading c i t i e s shows the f o l l o w i n g p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended March 23: Decreases of $133,000,000 i n commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l l o a n s , $1*32,000,000 i n United S t a t e s Government s e c u r i t i e s , $709,000,000 i n demand d e p o s i t s adjusted, and $708,000,000 i n demand deposits credited t o domestic banks. Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans decreased $73,000,000 in New York City and by smaller amounts i n nearly a l l other d i s t r i c t s . Loans t o banke decreased $lll*,000,000. Holdings of Treasury b i l l s decreased $11*7,000,000 i n New York City and by smaller amounts i n nearly a l l other d i s t r i c t s j there was a net decrease of $318,000,000 at a l l reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness a l s o decreased i n nearly a l l d i s t r i c t s and the net decrease was $118,000,000; the p r i n c i p a l decreases were $62,000,000 i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t and $25,000,000 i n the S t . Louis D i s t r i c t , Holdings of United S t a t e s Government bonds increased $1*8,000,000, Demand d e p o s i t s adjusted decreased i n a l l d i s t r i c t s , the p r i n c i p a l decreases being $186,000,000 i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t , $176,000,000 i n New York City, $70,000,000 i n the Cleveland D i s t r i c t , $58,000,000 i n the Kansas City D i s t r i c t , and $15,000,000 i n the Dallas D i s t r i c t .
