R, 284 For immediate release STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS Board of Governor* of the Federal Reserve System December 5, I9W1 Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks i n Leading C i t i e s The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in 101 leading c i t i e s shows the following principal changes for the week ended November 29* Increases of $585,000,000 in holdings of United States Government obligations and $1,204,000,000 in United States Government deposits, and a decrease of $6)0,000,000 in demand deposits adjusted. Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and agricultural loans declined $26,000,000, Loans t o brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government obligations increased $299,000,000 in New York City and $326,000,000 at a l l reporting members* Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased in most d i s t r i c t s , and the t o t a l increase at a l l reporting member banks was $141,000,000; the principal changes were an i n crease of $125,000,000 in the Chicago D i s t r i c t and a decrease of $98,000,000 in New York City. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness and of Treasury notes increased $110,000,000 and $93,000,000, respectively, Holdings of United States Government bonds increased in a l l d i s t r i c t s , the principal increase being $164,000,000 i n New York City; the t o t a l increase was $2^1,000,000, Demand deposits adjusted declined in aearly a l l d i s t r i c t s , the principal decreases being $205,000,000 in New York City, • $128,000,000 in the Cleveland Dist r i c t , and $97,000*000 in the Chicago D i s t r i c t ; the t o t a l decrease was $630,000,000, United States Government deposits increased i n a l l d i s t r i c t s .
