George H. Clay was the first native of the greater Kansas City area to be named president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, a role he held from March 1, 1961, to February 29, 1976. In 1958, Clay joined the Kansas City Fed as vice president and general counsel. He assumed the role of Bank president in 1961. During his 15 years in that role, Clay was a staunch defender of the Federal Reserve's decentralized regional structure. (Source: Federal Reserve History)
