/ U.S. FinflnCIflL DATA Week ending April 12,1967 LIBRARY FEDERAL RESERVE CREDIT (Page 6) Federal Reserve credit, adjusted for reserve requirement changes, has risen at a rapid 21 per cent annual rate since late December. This sharp gain provided reserves for both time deposit growth and monetary expansion, in addition to offsetting technical factors which absorbed reserves during the period. Federal Reserve credit grew at a 3 per cent rate from April to December, after increasing 8 per cent in the year ending last April. MONEY STOCK (Pages 3 and 12) The nation's money stock, private demand deposits plus currency held by the nonbank public, averaged $173*2 billion in the four weeks ending April 5* Money has risen at a 6 per cent annual rate since late December, after showing a small net decline from last April to December. The trend rate of growth in money from i960 to 1965 was 3 per cent annually. The prolonged decline which began last spring and the recent sharp increase are marked departures from this trend. VELOCITY OF MONEY MEMBER BANK RESERVES Reserves available to support private demand deposits averaged $15*9 billion in the four weeks ending April 12, up at a 6.5 per cent annual rate since late December. These reserves, which provide a base for monetary expansion, declined at a 1.6 per cent annual rate from last April to December, after increasing 5 per cent in the year ending last April. From i960 to 1965, they grew at a trend rate of 1.8 per cent per year. http://fraser.stlouisfed.org Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (Page 2) (Pages 4 and 12) The income velocity of money (gross national product divided by the money stock) was virtually unchanged from the fourth quarter of 1966 to the first quarter of 1967? according to preliminary data. Since 1948, income velocity has risen about 3-6 per cent per year. During this period, when money rose rapidly after a prolonged decline or a relatively slow expansion (such as in 1954, 1958, i960 and 1962), income velocity changed little at first. Within a short time after money started to rise, income velocity rose more rapidly than the trend.
