THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
✓ The real value of total construction spending (public and private)
fell 1.9 percent in July, the largest drop in five months. Measured
from a year earlier, construction spending is off 0.6 percent, paced
by a 6.5 percent decline in non-residential spending.
Manufacturing activity increased modestly in August according
to the National Association of Purchasing Managers. Measuring
52.6 percent, the NAPM index rose above 50 percent for the fourth
time in the past five months, a level that generally indicates an
expanding manufacturing sector.
The index of leading economic indicators advanced 0.2 percent in
July, following a 0.5 percent increase in June. The index has
increased for six consecutive months.

✓ Total new factory orders for manufactured goods rose $5.5 billion
in July, or by 1.8 percent, the seventh increase in the past nine
months. The nominal value offactory orders is up 8.2 percent
from a year earlier.
✓ After falling at a 5.1 percent annual rate in June, real personal
consumption expenditures fell at a 0.5 percent rate in July. These
declines largely reflect reductions in purchases of motor vehicles.
Real PCE has increased 2.1 percent over the past year.
All data are seasonally adjusted unless otherwise indicated.
