THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
✓ Privately owned housing starts surged 4.5 percent in August to an
annual rate of1.525 million units, the highest since March 1994.
This increase stemmedfrom an 8.3 percent rise in single family starts.
^ The July U.S. goods and services trade deficit measured $11.7
billion, $3.5 billion more than in June. Exports fell 3.6 percent
in July, the sharpest decline since April 1994, while imports rose
1.2 percent.
Total industrial production advanced at a 6 percent annual rate in
August, following a 0.8 percent rate of gain in July. Manufacturing
output rose for the fifth consecutive month in August and is up
4 percent from a year earlier.
s/ The consumer price index (CPI) increased at a 1.5 percent annual
rate in August. Excluding food and energy prices, the CPI rose at a
0.7 percent rate, the smallest rise since December 1982. Consumer
prices have risen 2.9 percent over the past year.
^ Total retail sales rose at a 2 percent annual rate in August, as the
value of sales at automotive dealers increased for the first time in
three months. The nominal value of retail sales is up 4.3 percent
over the past year.
