THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
✓ Real gross domestic product (GDP) rose at a 2.3 percent annual
rate in the first quarter according to the preliminary estimate.
This is down 0.5 percentage points from last month’s advance
estimate and reflects a considerable downward revision in the rate
of business inventory accumulation, since the other main components
of GDP were all revised upward slightly. Measured from four
quarters earlier, real GDP has increased 1.7percent.

✓ New single-family home sales were at an annual rate of 776,000
in April, 6.7percent above the March sales rate and 27.6 percent
above last year’s pace. New home sales have risen for five of the
past six months.

✓ Paced by a sharp drop in new orders for transportation equipment,
the value of advance new orders for manufactured durable goods
fell 1.7 percent in April — the third decline in the past four months.
Excluding transportation orders, though, durable goods orders
rose 1.7 percent in April. New orders are not adjusted for inflation.

✓ The National Association of Realtors reported that existing
single-family home sales rose 0.5 percent in April to an annual
rate of 4.22 million units. The April sales rate, which was the second
highest on record, was 21.6 percent higher than a year earlier.

All data are seasonally adjusted unless otherwise indicated.
