1991

May 23, 1991

THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
^ U.S. durable goods orders rose 2.9 percent to $115.5 billion in
April, with increases across all major industries except transporta
tion equipment. This is the first rise in durable goods orders since
December 1990.
*/ The U.S. federal government budget surplus for April was $30.1
billion, substantially below the $41.8 billion surplus recorded in
April 1990. For the first seven months of the 1991 fiscal year, the
federal government deficit was $121.7 billion, with federal receipts
of $622.9 billion and expenditures of $744.6 billion. For the
comparable period last year, the federal deficit was $109 billion,
with federal receipts and expenditures of $597.8 billion and $706.8
billion, respectively.
✓ The U.S. merchandise trade deficit in March was $4.05 billion,
down $1.45 billion from its $5.50 billion level in February. The
March trade deficit was the smallest since June 1983. For the first
quarter of this year, the U.S. trade deficit was $16.93 billion, down
sharply from $26.18 billion in the first quarter of 1990.
