THE WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS:
■ Real GDP rose at a 1.4 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter
of 2002 according to the final estimate, which was unchanged from
the preliminary estimate but 0.7 percentage points more than the
advance estimate. During the fourth quarter, corporate profits rose
3.2 percent (not annualized), the first increase in four quarters.
After rising 8.2 percent in 2001 (fourth quarter to fourth quarter),
corporate profits fell 1.9 percent in 2002. Corporate profits are not
adjusted for price changes, but they include inventory valuation
and capital consumption adjustments.
■ For the week ending March 22, initial claims for state unemployment
insurance benefits totaled 402,000, which was down 25,000 from a
week earlier. The four-week moving average fell 4,000 from last
week’s 46-week high of 426,500.
■ The Conference Board reported that its help-wanted advertising
index measured 40 (1987=100) in February. The index measured
41 in January.
■ In February, new orders to manufacturers for durable goods fell
$2.1 billion, or 1.2 percent. New orders in January are now estimated
to have risen 1.9 percent, down significantly from last month’s
reported increase of 3.3 percent. Excluding new orders for transportation goods, the value of new orders fell 2.1 percent in February.
Manufacturers’ shipments of durable goods fell 1.6 percent in
February after rising 2.7 percent in January.
■ Sales of new single-family homes totaled 854,000 units at an annual
rate in February, down 8.1 percent from January and down 19.7
percent from December 2002.
All data are seasonally adjusted unless otherwise indicated.
