THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
✓ Industrial production decreased at a 2.9 percent annual rate in May,
the third consecutive monthly decrease. Since May 1994, however,
industrial production has increased 3 percent.

✓ Productivity in the business sector (output per hour) rose at a
2.3 percent rate in the first quarter of 1995, substantially above
last month’s preliminary estimate of a 0.3 percent rate of increase.

✓ The consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) increased
at a 3.2 percent rate in May, following a 4.9 percent rate of increase in
April. Excluding food and energy prices, the CPI rose at a 2.3 percent
rate in May, the smallest rise in five months.
%/ Total retail sales rose at a 2.6 percent rate in May, after falling
4 percent in April. Although auto sales rebounded in May, rising
at a 6.1 percent rate, they have fallen at a 2.1 percent rate since
December. Retail sales are not adjusted for inflation.

✓ After rising at a 5.8 percent rate in April, the producer price index
(PPI)for finished goods was unchanged in May. Meanwhile, the PPI
for intermediate materials rose at a 2.9 percent rate, the slowest
pace in a year.
