RESEARCH library ■ye Bunk •THE FEDERAL JRESERVE XltYNKot Mr st.ijohs THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS: ✓ Industrial production decreased at a 2.9 percent annual rate in May, the third consecutive monthly decrease. Since May 1994, however, industrial production has increased 3 percent. ✓ Productivity in the business sector (output per hour) rose at a 2.3 percent rate in the first quarter of 1995, substantially above last month’s preliminary estimate of a 0.3 percent rate of increase. ✓ The consumer price index for all urban consumers (CPI-U) increased at a 3.2 percent rate in May, following a 4.9 percent rate of increase in April. Excluding food and energy prices, the CPI rose at a 2.3 percent rate in May, the smallest rise in five months. %/ Total retail sales rose at a 2.6 percent rate in May, after falling 4 percent in April. Although auto sales rebounded in May, rising at a 6.1 percent rate, they have fallen at a 2.1 percent rate since December. Retail sales are not adjusted for inflation. ✓ After rising at a 5.8 percent rate in April, the producer price index (PPI)for finished goods was unchanged in May. Meanwhile, the PPI for intermediate materials rose at a 2.9 percent rate, the slowest pace in a year. All data are seasonally adjusted unless otherwise indicated.
