THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:
✓ Advance new orders for manufactured durable goods increased
0.6percent in March, compared with a 0.7percent decrease in
February. Excluding defense, new orders rose 0.4 percent last
month. Data for new orders are not adjusted for inflation.

✓

The employment cost index for total compensation of private
industry workers increased at a 2.3 percent annual rate from
December 1994 to March 1995, its smallest rate of increase since
the index began in 1980. Benefits increased at a 0.6percent rate
over the same period, the slowest pace since March 1987.

t/ The Conference Board’s index of consumer confidence rose 5.3 per­
centage points in April to 105.5percent (1985=100), its highest level
since May 1990.

✓ According to the National Association of Realtors,

sales of existing
single-family homes increased 5.8 percent in March, only the second
increase in the last 12 months.

✓ Commercial and industrial loans at all banks rose at a 14 percent
rate from the average of the four weeks ending on February 1 to
the average of the four weeks ending on April 12 (see page 11).
