Consumer prices have risen 2.6 percent since March 1993. The producer price index for finished goods rose at a 2.9 percent annual rate in March, after rising 5.9 percent in February. Producer prices have increased 0.2 percent during the past year. %/ Retail sales advanced at a 5.1 percent annual rate in March, after rising 21.1 percent in February. March sales were up 8.9percent from a year earlier. Retail sales data are not adjusted for inflation. %/ Outstanding consumer installment credit expanded at a 5.5 percent annual rate in February, following an increase of 10.1 percent in January. Consumer credit has increasedfor nine consecutive months. Views expressed do not necessarily reflect official positions of the Federal Reserve System.
