THE WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS:

The consumer price index increased at an annual rate of 4.2 per­
cent in March, following an increase of 3.3 percent in February.
Consumer prices have risen 2.6 percent since March 1993.
The producer price index for finished goods rose at a 2.9 percent
annual rate in March, after rising 5.9 percent in February. Producer
prices have increased 0.2 percent during the past year.
%/ Retail sales advanced at a 5.1 percent annual rate in March, after
rising 21.1 percent in February. March sales were up 8.9percent
from a year earlier. Retail sales data are not adjusted for inflation.
%/ Outstanding consumer installment credit expanded at a 5.5 percent
annual rate in February, following an increase of 10.1 percent in
January. Consumer credit has increasedfor nine consecutive months.
