April 10, 2003 USFinancialData THE WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS: ■ The U.S. goods and services trade deficit totaled $40.3 billion in February, $0.9 billion less than January’s deficit. In February, exports of goods and services rose 0.5 percent, after rising 1.7 percent in January. Imports, by contrast, fell 0.4 percent after falling 1.8 percent in January. Measured from a year earlier, exports have risen 6.8 percent and imports have risen 11.2 percent. U.S. goods and services trade data are not adjusted for price changes. ■ After rising 1.8 percent in January and 1.7 percent in February, the U.S. import price index rose 0.5 percent in March. The deceleration in import prices reflected a 1.8 percent fall in petroleum prices, which followed gains of 14.4 percent in January and 11.1 percent in February. At the same time, prices of nonpetroleum imports rose 0.9 percent, or 11.7 percent at an annual rate, the largest increase since this monthly series began in January 1989. ■ In February, the value of inventories held by wholesalers rose 0.3 percent, the third increase in the past four months. Sales registered by wholesalers were up 0.5 percent in February after rising 1.4 percent in January. The inventory-to-sales ratio remained at 1.22, which is the lowest level since July 1984. ■ The value of consumer credit outstanding rose 0.1 percent in February. Measured from a year earlier, consumer credit has increased 3.7 percent. ■ In March, nonfarm payroll employment fell 108,000, or 0.1 percent, the fourth decline in the past five months. The civilian unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.8 percent. All data are seasonally adjusted unless otherwise indicated.
