SURVEY OF CURRENT BUSINESS
WEEKLY SUPPLEMENT
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE
BUREAU OF FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC COMMERCE
WASHINGTON, D. C , JULY 18, 1940
SUMMARY OF BUSINESS TRENDS
tiieifirsyhalf of July industrial activity was mainat^bcfut 1 the level prevailing at the end of June,
according to the limited data now available. Steel-ingot production increased fractionally to 86.8 percent of capacity for the
current week—the second highest rate for the year—as against
86.5 percent in the week preceding the holiday. Automobile
production has declined less than seasonally so far this month
with major firms in the industry increasing assembly schedules
for the week ended July 13 on the strength of the heavy retail
automobile sales in the first 10 days of the month. Last *veek
over 62,000 cars came off the line against 52,000 the previous
week, although several producers have ceased work on the 1940
model. With the exception of electric power and petroleum
output, other major industries showed no decline in daily average
production during the holiday week.
Spot commodity prices, however, weakened further during the
past week. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' index of 28 commodities (August 1939=100) declined from 110.8 on July 5 to
109.2 on July 12. Both the raw industrial and foodstuff components moved downward, as did import commodities to a lesser
extent. Wheat experienced the severest decline, falling below

68 cents at Kansas City to the lowest point since August 1939.
Metal prices were again weak with tin and scrap steel down;
the raw materials component receded to the lowest point since
September 5. Hog and corn prices were outstanding exceptions
to the general price trend.
In the financial markets bond flotations attained large volumes last week for the first time in recent months when more
than $114 million in securities were offered. Inasmuch as the
upward movement in bond prices since early June, both for
private and governmental issues, is continuing to reduce yields,
the market proved favorable for the new offerings. At the same
time little interest wes evidenced in stocks, the turn-over for the
week falling to the lowest volume since 1918. The Dow-Jones
averages of industrial, rail, and utility shares remained virtually unchanged over the past 2 weeks, and little changed from
a month ago.
Department store sales for the week ended July 6 indicated,
as did the reports of retail automobile sales, that consumer purchasing was being maintained at June volumes. Gains over a
year ago were shown in all parts of the country, except in New
York City where several large stores were closed for 3 days.
