SURVEY OF CURRENT BUSINESS
WEEKLY SUPPLEMENT
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE
BUREAU OF FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC COMMERCE
WASHINGTON, D. C, FEBRUARY 2, 1939
SUMMARY OF BUSINESS TRENDS
AVAILABLE weekly data show only slight variation in the
JLJL rate of industrial activity during January. For the month
the indicated volume of industrial output, seasonally corrected,
was lower than in December but about one-fourth above the
January 1938 rate. The major decline from December to
January according to the weekly figures, has been in the steel
industry where the ingot rate has dropped moderately at a time
when the seasonal expectation is for a sizable increase. Automobile production, though lower than in December, is holding
at a better-than-seasonal rate.
Electric power production in January, seasonally corrected*,
showed a small reduction from the December rate but was 6
percent higher than in the early weeks of 1938. Production of
bituminous coal, while 10 percent larger than a year earlier,
showed a contraseasonal decline from December. This decline
was reflected in lower freight loadings of coal. Railway freight
traffic, other than coal, was slightly higher on an adjusted daily
basis than in the preceding month and was more than 5 percent

larger than a year earlier. Loadings of miscellaneous freight,
which include a large proportion of manufactured goods, were
12 percent above those in the early weeks of last year. These
data and partial reports on retail and wholesale trade indicate
that distribution of commodities was at a more active rate than
in January 1938.
In the week ended January 28 the downward movement of
security pi ices was extended. Major declines also occurred on
European security markets. The Dow-Jones average of industrial slmre quotations dosed on Saturday at 139, a reduction of
10 points since Friday, January 20. Since the first of the year
the industrial "average" has declined 10 percent and at the close
of last week's trading was the lowest since last September.
Quotations of railroad shares so far this year have declined more
than have industrial stocks; Saturday's "average" was down 16
percent from the figure at the beginning of 1939. Corporate bond
prices weakened along with the recession in share quotations.
