THE UNLEARNING PROCESS

T h e p r o b l e m of star t i n g a c o m m e n c e m e n t a d d r e s s is as d i f f i c u l t fo r
the s p e a k e r as e n d i n g it s o m e t i m e s is for the audience.

Unfortunately,

P e r h a p s p a r a m o u n t is the n e c e s s i t y f o r a c c o m m o d a t i o n to a ne w

i n t e l l e c t u a l d i s c i p l i n e w h i c h is i n e v i t a b l y a c c o m p a n i e d by e n v i r o n m e n t a l
c hanges.

T h e r e are still d i s t i n c t d i f f e r e n c e s in c u l t u r e p a t t e r n s that

are m o r e th a n g e o g r a p h i c .

O c c u p a t i o n s and e c o n o m i c p o s i t i o n set a d d i t i o n a l

d i m e n s i o n s w h i c h m u s t be a d j u s t e d to.
The p r o c e s s of a d j u s t m e n t is a dual one -- w i t h l e a r n i n g a nd u n l e a r n i n g
g o i n g side by side.

Of the two, the u n l e a r n i n g p h a s e I w o u l d be i n c l i n e d to

a s s i g n the m o r e i m p o r t a n t role.

f o r m a l l y e d u c a t e d men, a nd o u r i n q u i r y a s s u m e s a special s i g n ificance.

It seems to me there are at least

of t h e m -- m u s t be a c c o m m o d a t e d in part.

This is not the s e ll-out it sounds,

f or the d e s i r e for a c c e p t a n c e is a u n i v e r s a l one, and b e s i d e s w i t h i n the
gr o u p p r e j u d i c e s are o f t e n a t t r a c t i v e support for its m a i n t e n a n c e .

those d i r e c t l y re l a t e d to o u r p r o f e s s i o n are

m a i n t a i n e d r e a s o n a b l y v i a b l e , but the o t h e r s s u f f e r f r o m disuse.
T h e r e are few a r e a s of m a n ’s k n o w l e d g e that are s e l f - m a i n t a i n i n g .
Generally,

these m a y be c h a r a c t e r i z e d as t h ose i m p e r a t i v e s of c o m m o n and

c e n t r a l e l e m e n t s of t h o u g h t that are s e l f - e v i d e n t in a T h o m i s t i c sense, a b o u t
w h i c h I shall say m o r e later.

The rest of our k n o w l e d g e -- r o u g h l y 9 8 % of

o u r f o r m a l e d u c a t i o n -- is c o n c e r n e d w i t h facts, or a l l e g e d facts, w h i c h
can be l u mped u n d e r the "what" and " h o w 11 catego r i e s .

The c u l l i n g p r o c e s s is at least as i m p o r t a n t as time goes by as the a d d i t i v e
one.

H a v i n g a c q u i r e d a c e r t a i n c o m p e t e n c e and r e c o g n i t i o n in one career,

it h a s b e e n a great s h o c k to find out w h a t great c h a n g e s h a d be e n o c c u r r i n g in
the w o r l d o u t s i d e m y o w n field.

M u c h of m y fo r m a l t r a i n i n g in e c o n o m i c s h a d

b e c o m e o b s o l e t e , a n d the m i s c o n c e p t i o n s i n e v i t a b l e w h e n one is o n l y a p a r t - t i m e
observer,

r a t h e r than a p a r t i c i p a n t , a d d e d a f u r t h e r d i m e n s i o n to the u n l e a r n ­

ing p r o c ess.

T here is scant c o m f o r t f or the p r e s e n t e x p o n e n t s of the n e w

e c o n o m i c s in this a d m i s s i o n .

L i t t l e r e a s o n e x i s t s to b e l i e v e they have fo u n d

the u l t i m a t e truths, an a d m i s s i o n the m o r e sk i l l e d and k n o w l e d g e a b l e p r o ­
p o n e n t s are q u i c k to admit.

is o f f i c i a l l y c h a r g e d w i t h the r e s p o n s i b i l i t y for o ur m o n e t a r y policy.
N e i t h e r w h o l l y public, n o r m o r e than s u p e r f i c i a l l y private,

The a n o m a l y of the S y s t e m ’s p o s i t i o n is h e i g h t e n e d w h e n

k n o w l e d g e is imperfect.

To m e e t this c h a l l e n g e -- and survive,

r e q u i r e s a q u a l i t y of m e n t a l a g i l i t y and f l e x i b i l i t y .

E s s e ntial to this are

a n t e n n a s e n s i t i v e to change, a w i l l i n g n e s s to test the n e w a g a i n s t the old,
a n d the c o u r a g e to d i s c a r d the o b s o l e t e or reject the invalid.
