In 1 9 7 0 , there w e r e 9.2 m i l l i o n

a n d o t h e r r a c e s — ^ in the l a b o r f o r c e - - m e a n i n g

w e r e h o l d i n g jobs or s e e k i n g w o r k .

The n u m b e r of b l a c k f a r m e r s and f a r m w o r k e r s

d r o p p e d b y 63 p e r c e n t (to 3 2 8 t h o u s a n d ) in c o n t r a s t to a d e c l i n e
of a b o u t 40 p e r c e n t (to 3.1 m i l l i o n ) for a l l p e r s o n s in the s a m e
category.

T h e r e f o r e , , in 1 9 7 0 , b l a c k s a c c o u n t e d for a b o u t 11 p e r

c e n t of e m p l o y m e n t in a g r i c u l t u r e , less t h a n t h e i r
in 1960 w h e n the p r o p o r t i o n w a s 16 p e r c e n t .

from private household employment was even more striking.

the last d e c a d e , the n u m b e r of N e g r o e s so e m p l o y e d fell b y a b o u t
34 p e r c e n t (to 652 t h o u s a n d ) ;

the c o r r e s p o n d i n g d r o p for a l l w o r k e r s

w a s o n l y 21 p e r c e n t (to 1.6 m i l l i o n ) .

A l t h o u g h roughly half of all

h o u s e h o l d w o r k e r s w e r e b l a c k in 1 9 6 0 , the r a t i o h a d d e c l i n e d
just over two-fifths by 1970.

W h i l e t o t a l e m p l o y m e n t r o s e m o d e r a t e l y , the n u m b e r of b l a c k jobholders declined slightly.

H o w e v e r , the l o s s e s w e r e c o n c e n t r a t e d

among

b l u e c o l l a r w o r k e r s , a s the n u m b e r of N e g r o e s e m p l o y e d in w h i t e c o l l a r
c o n t i n u e d to e x p a n d .

W i t h i n the b l u e c o l l a r g r o u p , the a t t r i t i o n

w a s m o s t n o t i c e a b l e in the c a s e of o p e r a t i v e s .

This situation was

m a i n l y a r e f l e c t i o n o f the c o n t i n u e d s l u g g i s h n e s s of a c t i v i t y

in

the m a n u f a c t u r i n g s e c t o r in w h i c h a s i z a b l e p r o p o r t i o n of b l a c k s
employed.
