During the s :::-.me period South Dakota hn,s i ncrv,se d its water conservation
and supply program from 162 projects to 209 , in cluding mor e than 40 small oper a tions
to provide water for both huma n and live stock needs in village s and rur a l ar en s which
were without funds v1hen community we lls r ru1 dry.

Two hundred of these sr1all projects

will b e started by the Works Progre cs .A.dmin istr rction in South Dako t a by the e nd of
the week , a ccording to M. A. Kennedy, St a t e .Aaministr,ctor.
The majority of conserva ti on dnm s i n South Dr..kot a , Mr. Kennedy said, ar e
designed to provide a r eservoir or nrtifi cial l nke covering an ave rnge of 10 to 20
acres, although the h,rge st of this 'type, in Lawr ence County~ will store water in a

300-acre area.

He estimated the total cost of the wat er conservation progrr:un in

this drought-stricken state at $1,500,000.

South Dakota.
North Dakota exp ects to provide at l e::>,st one drim in eve ry township of the
drought counties b e fore it completes its program, Administrator Moodie s a id.

Alt hough, as in South Dakot a , most of the w11,ter cons e rvrttion proj ects of
North DPkot a ar e small, the Epp ing Drun in Williams County, is one of the l ar ges t
clay core dams in the world.
