To impr ove the fit of children's r eadymade garments , the U. S. Bureau of
Rorie Econonics , in cooperation with WPA, neasured 147 , 083 ty"()ical Aoerican
boys and girls, aged 4 t o 17 , in 15 states and the District of Colunbia .

The

study showed that t~e dinensions of chil dren of the same a~e have sucn a
trenendous range that the "average " ch ild of a :particul a r a ge group does not
e~i st .
