Some 12,000 certified' workers , she explained, are empl oyed t o aid in the t ask of caring for pe rs ons unab le t o pay for medical service in 1,000 hos pit als, instit utions and convalescence homes. About 6,000 workers give assist a nce in 400 health departments, l abo r at ori ~s, clinics and out-patient departments . Bureau of Rorie Econonics , in cooperation with WPA, neasured 147 , 083 ty"()ical Aoerican boys and girls, aged 4 t o 17 , in 15 states and the District of Colunbia . The study showed that t~e dinensions of chil dren of the same a~e have sucn a trenendous range that the "average " ch ild of a :particul a r a ge group does not e~i st .
