As the vehicle for converting this otherwise idle man-

pO\••er to the strengthening of our naval and military establishment,

WPA assumes an increasingly important role in the defense program."
1-'ir. Hunter reported that the volume of defense project
approvals during the last two weeks in October was greater than fer
any similar period since July 15.

Ninety-six individual projects

aggregating $13,018,377 in WPA funds alone, were given final approval
between October 16 and 31.

Thirty-three states, the District of

Columbia and the Territory of Hawaii were included.
Projects for the constructi on and improvement of airports,
totaling $6,204,314, constituted the largest share of f unds approved
during the two-week period, he continued

Projects for the Army

to t aled $2,795,079; those for the Nati onal Guard, $1,432,7G2 , and for
the Navy, $487,869.

Defense projects sponsored by local go·,ernment

agencies, several embracing work on st r ategic military hi ghways,
agFcregated $2,063,651,

A single p roject for $34,702, sponsored by

the Coast Gua rd, completes the total.
Among the municipal airport projects approved as part of the
defense rrogram are t hree in North Carolinao

They involve extension

and paving of rumv"ays, improvement of drainage, installation of
li ghting equipment and miscellaneous improvem ents.

One is at Charlotte,

costing $259,522 in WIA funds; another in the Greensboro-High Foint
area, costing $253,505, and the third at Winston•~Salem, costing
$345,132,

Other import a nt airport proj ects are:

Madison, Wisconsin,

costing $230,711; Denver, Colorado, two projects aggregating $586,835;

Palm Beach, Florida, $420,110, and Sa nford, Ma ine, $258,036.

The

Indiana National Guard is sponsor for a pr oject tot Aling $1,212, 000
for the construction of runways , hangars, li.zhting and drainage
faciliti es at St out Fi eld, near Indianapolis.
Two of the Army's i mpn r tant eas t ern arsenals are t o be
i mproved under pro j ec ts approved l a te in Oc t ober.

At the Picatinny

Ars enal, near Dover , New J ers ey, sev eral new buil di ng s to house explosive s manufacturing eq_uipment are c ont empl a t ed unde r a $281,123
project.

At the Watervliet Arsenal , liear Alban~T, Kew York, WPA workers

will co nstruct a new r a ilroad s:pur and. i nstall heati ng , li ghting and
plumbing equipment in several buildi ngs under a $126,657 project .
A $103,093 project approved for the Delaware Ordnance Depot, in Salem

County, New J ersey, will pt:,r roit the construction of new f ence s and
patrol roads at unprotect ed portions of the r eservation.
Other outstanding proj e cts spo nsored by the Army include
construction and rehabilitation ,-iork at Fort Wayne, .JJet roit, Michigan,
c osting $215,916, and the construction of r unway s and other i mp r ovements at Mitchel Fieli, New York, costine $238,301 .

A project for $370 ,459 was approved for the new Naval Air
Station at Opa Locka, Fl or i da , where WPA workers will as s ist with the
construction of the l anding field and ot her necessary facilities.

Two

outstanding National Guard proj e cts appro ved are tho se for Ca~p
Williams, Wisco ns in, $453,417, and. Camp Dod.ge , I owa, $257,158.

heavy cluty surfacing applied , and bridges a.ad culverts strengthened .
This is considered typical of t he type ~f work to be carried on on
