All States Share in Decline of WPA Employment.

The poiicy of the Works Progress Administration to transfer work-relief
employes as rapidly as possible from its projects to those of other Federal agencies and to private industry, has resulted in all states sharing in an employment
decline of 34,999 persons from the WPA rolls between May 9 and May 16.
On May 16, a total of 2,417,581 workers were on the Works Progress Administration rolls, as compared with 2,452,580 for the week ending May 9.
On March 3, Works Progress Administrator Harry L. Hopkins ordered a
gradual retrenchment of WPA rolls from the February high of 3,037,440 to a minimum
of 2,310,100 by June 30.

Mr. Hopkins explained that increased employment opportuni-

ties afforded by the Public Works Administration, Federal and local road building
programs, and in agriculture and other seasonal occupations, would be depended upon
to absorb a lare;e number of Works Progress Administration workers.
(Employment by States of WPA workers and employment by States of workers
under the Works Pro gram are shown in the attached tables.)
