Average residen t ial rents in defense are~s have increased sub-

..

star.tial-ly. since the beginning of the defense program, according to a summary
of rental surveys prepared by the WPA Division of Research an4. releaseq. today
by F. H. Dryden, .'\.cting Commissioner of Work ?rejects.
Rents have been increased in 114 of 115 areas surveyed, the summary
shows, but the rate of increase ranges from one percent or less in Baton Rouge ,
La., Gallipolis, Ohio, and KeW})ort, R. I., to more than 90 percent in
Starke, Fla., and Leesville, La.

Only one city--Boise, Idaho--showed no

T~e report is derived from recurrent surveys conducted during
1941 by the WiA Division of Research, in cooperation with local WPA offic es ,
at the req_u(; s t of the Office of Price Adljlinistration.
The surveys covered chiefly areas near military est?.blishments,
sm.?,11 industrie.l commu.ni ties, and other smRll ci tit:~s from which complaints
of high rentals had been received by OPA.

In order to maintain a check upon

the eff ect of the war en r esidential r ents , WFA expects to repeat the surveys
every four or six months in most of the areas, Mr. Dryden said.
Average rentals for ei thcr MRrch, 1940 1 or September, 1940, are
used ~s the base for computing rent incr~ases.

Latest reports show that in

approximately half the cities surveyed the a.ver~.ge tenant is paying at least
8 percent more for his dwelling than he was before the war production program
got under way.

The reports are based on surveys of family dwelling units only,
and do not include single rooms.

Since cities surveyed were selected because

of specific interest to OFA, results should not be regard~d as a national
sampling for statistical purposes .
(The attached table, by cities, shows indexes of average rentals .
disclosed b:r each survey.)
