national defense,

Mrs . Kerr said.

"There is a tr P.mendous demand

for the training of industrial workers, for reorienting school and
adult educatLm '., rograms and. for guic.ance in lei sure ti me ecti vi ties
both in the nei ghh orhood. of military camps and expa11d ing industrial
areas.
"In each of these fields the WPA is in position to render
considerable as s istance to established authorities in e xpanding their
"9rograms to me et the need..

There are approximately 60 , 000 workers in

our education a.nd r e cr ea tion p rograms and their activities extend
into every city and practically all of the 3,100 c0unties in the
country.
11 ·:::hese

conferences were requeste d by many ~,ulilic officials

who wanted to develo-p means for further co or d.in.-3_tint; their own
activities with those of t he WPA.

The WPA , in turn, is pl eased to

take any st ens that will result in the wider usefulness of its -p ro g ra'!l,

It i s significant of the urgency of t hes e } rcble ms that
