More tha.n half of South Carolina's WPA cost to supply work for women an d
white-collar workers.

Slight! y more than half of the money for Works Progress Administration
projects in South Carolina will be spent giving work to unemployed women, white
collar and other professional and technical unemployed persons on educational,
clerical, sanitation ·and health, and sewing and other goods projects, according
to an announcement ma.de today by Harry L. Hopkins, Works Progress Administrator.
A listing by types and cost of projects sho ws that of the total
$9,834,319 to be sp ent as of December 31, 1935, the following will receive a
slight majority of the allotment; educational, professional a nd clerical, $802,635
or 8 .2 per cent; sewing and other goods projects, $1,181,572 or 1 2 .0 per cent;

sanitation and health, $1,332,449 or 13.6 per cent and miscell aneous projects,
$1,824,569 or 18 .5 per cent.
The balance of tho money will bo spont on highway s , roads and streets,
public buildings, both governmental and educatio nal, parks and playgrounds, flood
control and otber conservation, water supply and sewer systems, el ectric utilities
and transportation.
