GRACEVILLE: M. L. Andrews and
Dr. R. G. Popoff have been elected
directors of The First State Bank,
it was announced by John A. Malmberg, president. Mr. Andrews is
cashier of the bank. Dr. Popoff
has practiced medicine here since
1962.
LYLE: C. R. Hansen, a State Sen­
ator from Austin, has purchased the
Farmers State Bank from A. P. Gar­
riate , chairman, and C. J. Gislason,
president, and Mrs. Gislason. Mr.
Hansen also owns the State Bank
of Rose Creek, of which he is pres­
ident and managing officer.
MINNEAPOLIS: Joyce A. Swan, ex­
ecutive vice president and publisher
of the Minneapolis Star and Tribune,
has been appointed a Class C
director of the Federal Reserve
Bank of Minneapolis and designated
as chairman and Federal Reserve
Agent of the bank for 1967. Robert
F. Leach, St. Paul attorney, was
reappointed deputy chairman of the
board for the year. Mr. Swan has
been a Class B director. An elec­
tion to fill his unexpired term will
be held soon. John A. Moorhead,
president of Northwestern National
Bank, Minneapolis, was elected by
the Minneapolis Fed directors to

be a member of the Federal Advisory
Council for 1967.
MINNEAPOLIS: Gordon Murray, pres­
ident, First National Bank, has an­
nounced the promotion of several
officers and election of several new
ones. In the correspondent bank
division, S. R. Omlie has been
elected vice president; Edward L.
Kalafat has been advanced to as­
sistant vice president, and Richard
L. Parnell is a new assistant cash­
ier. Other promotions include: Joyce
S. Finrud to vice president, trust
department; Robert R. Helmerichs,
Dwight W. Anderson and Thomas E.
Leary to assistant vice presidents,
and Arthur C. Hopper, David A.
McChesney, P. James Sicora and
Duane M. Glad to assistant cashiers.
Robert B. Gillespie, Jr., was named
assistant secretary.
OWATONNA: At Security Bank and
Trust Company, Dave Robbins has
been appointed a commercial de­
partment loaning officer and is
succeeded as manager of the install­
ment loan department by Charles
Rousher. Ron Arndt has been ad­
vanced in the installment loan de­
partment to the position of inter­
viewer.
ST. PAUL: A realignment of titles
to better designate job responsi­
bilities has been announced at

American National Bank & Trust
Company by John F.Nash, president.
Two men designated assistant vice
presidents are GlenO. Olson, whose
additional title is director of adver­
tising and public relations, and
J. T. Sample, Jr., whose title is
international banking officer. Carroll F. Erfdman and Robert J. Hall
were elected assistant cashiers.
Donald R. Rigsby was named install­
ment credit officer.
ST. PAUL: John A. Marien has
been promoted to assistant vice
president at Stock Yards National
Bank, South St. Paul.

BULLETINS...
BUFFALO CENTER, IA.: W. D. Ley,
associated with his father, W. E.
Ley, both of Lakota, have purchased
controlling interest in the Farmers
Trust & Savings Bank, Buffalo Cen­
ter, from E. E. Sapp, president. Mr.
Sapp has been with the bank 52
years and due to ill health is re­
tiring from active management, but
will remain as chairman. Farmers
T&S has assets of $6 million and
maintains an office at Lakota.
ALLIANCE, NEBR.: LeRoy Abbott,
62, chairman of Guardian State
Bank, and head of the Abbott Com­

BOONE: Effective January 15,
LuVern Babbitt will succeed Everett
Brown as farm manager for the
Boone State Bank & Trust Co.
Mr. Brown will leave at that time
to join the correspondent bank
staff of the United States National
Bank of Omaha. Mr. Babbitt has
been with the bank 11 years.
CALMAR: Adrian Smith, cashier,
Iowa State Bank, has also been
elected a vice president of the
bank.
CEDAR RAPIDS: Fred W. Smith
retired from Merchants National
Bank January 1. Mr. Smith joined
the bank in 1919, spent the major
part of his career in the commercial
loan department as a vice president
and senior loan officer, and has
been vice chairman of the board
of directors the past three years.
He will continue as a director,

retaining his residence at 305 Toma­
hawk Trail, S.E., Cedar Rapids.
Merchants National also has
received approval of its application
to the Comptroller of the Currency
for a detached drive-in facility to
be located at 3401 Mt. Vernon Road,
S.E., and construction of the unit
is tentatively scheduled for late
spring.
COLUMBUS JUNCTION: Larry L.
Prior has joined the Columbus Junc­
tion State Bank. Since graduating
from State University of Iowa in
1963 he has been with a Sioux City
CPA firm and successfully com­
pleted his CPA exams last May.
DES MOINES: George Olmsted and
William L. Cobb have been elected
directors of Central National Bank
and Trust Co. Mr. Olmsted is chair­
man and president of International
Bank and also heads Financial
General Corp., which has interests
in banking, insurance and industry.
International Bank late last month
completed purchase of 63.5% of
Central National’s stock. Mr. Cobb
is president of Financial General
Corp. Mr. Olmsted is a Des Moines
native and is chairman of the firm’ s
Hawkeye-Security Insurance Com­
pany here. Mr. Cobb formerly was
president

Hawkeye-Security.

IBM 360, model 30. Also, the other
four Brenton banks at Vinton, Clar­
ion, Eagle Grove and Emmetsburg
will begin daily processing o f their
accounts through the center, which
presently employs 13 persons. Truck
service provides pick up at each
bank daily with overnight proces­
sing and delivery service of records
by the next morning. This will be
discontinued when data transmission
by telephone is installed at some
time in the future.
DES MOINES: George J. Buser,
former assistant secretary, Iowa
Bankers Association, has joined
Bank of Bellevue, Nebr. as vice
president. Placement was made by
Bankers Service Corp., Des Moines.
DES MOINES: Jay E. Tone, Jr.,
vice president and treasurer of
of Tone Brothers Coffee and Spices,
has been appointed volunteer state
chairman for the U.S. Savings Bonds
program in Iowa. He succeeds
Marvin Schmidt, director of legal
and public affairs for John Deere
and Co., Des Moines.
DES MOINES: The second semester
classes for Des Moines A.I.B. will
commence January 10. On that date,
classes will be held from 4 -7 p.m.
in Accounting II at Capital City
State Bank, Principles of Bank
Operations at Central National Bank
directors room, Supervision & Per­
sonnel Administration at Central
National Bank lunch room. On
January 12 the course in Effective
English will be held 4 -7 p.m. at
Central National. Classes will con­
tinue weekly during the semester.

FORT DODGE: Robert R. Kurtz,
president of Charles A . Brown, Inc.,

KEOKUK: Edward K. Johnstone, 77,
president of Keokuk Savings Bank
and Trust C o., died December 31.
Survivors are his widow, and his
son, Edward, who is executive vice
president of the bank.
MASON CITY: John M. Powell has
been advanced from assistant vice
president and trust officer to vice
president and trust officer. A gradu­
ate of the University of Iowa law
school, he joined the bank in 1965
as head of the trust department.
OSKALOOSA: Russell S. Howard,
Jr., vice president of Mahaska State
Bank, has been elected president
of the Oskaloosa Chamber of Com­
merce for 1967.

Ossian State Bank announced re­
cently the promotion of Orville C.
Winger from cashier to vice pres­
ident, and Mrs. Bernice Werner
from assistant cashier to cashier.
The new assistant cashier is Miss
Eleanor J. Linderbaum.
WALL LAKE: C.W. Shaw, executive
vice president of Wall Lake Savings

Bank, died December 29 at the age
of 83. Burial was December 31. He
had been with the bank 55 years.
He is survived by his widow, and
one son, Edward, of Wall Lake.
WAUKON: James G. Sneer, cashier,
Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank,
announces an increase in surplus of
$50,000 by transfer from undivided
profits. Capital and surplus now
are $100,000 each.
WILLIAMSBURG: O .E . Jones, pres­
ident, Farmers Trust & Savings
Bank, reports that directors voted
to transfer $100,000 from undivided
profits to surplus, increasing the
surplus to $500,000.

son as executive vice president of

tional Bank’ s retirement and pen­
sion plan at year-end were Ralph F .
Miller, chief clerk in the trust

Kastan, switchboard operator. Mr.
Miller has been in the trust depart­
ment 23 of his 38 years with the
bank. Mrs. Kastan has been with
the bank since May, 1948.

holiday cruise in the Caribbean
Sea. The ship docked in New York
Jan. 4 and funeral services were
held later in Alliance. With him
was his wife, Eugenia, and his two
sons, LeRoy, Jr., and Jim, and
LeRoy, Jr.’ s wife.
