n a t ion al Economic t r e i i d s PREPARED MONTH ENDING: BY January 31, 1970 FEDERAL RESERVE BANK OF ST. LOUIS RELEASED: February 24, 1970 Real product declined slightly from the third to the fourth quarter of 1969 (pages 8 and 9), the first decline in the production of goods and services since early 1967. The dip in real product was accompanied by slowing trends in employment, sales, industrial production, personal income and housing, which have continued through the first month of 1970. Prices rose at a slightly less rapid rate in the fourth quarter than in the three previous quarters (page 15), but a slowing trend has not yet been confirmed by the wholesale and consumer price indexes. Payroll employment was unchanged from October to January (pages 2 and 3), compared with a 3.3 per cent increase in the previous year and a 2.3 per cent 1957-68 trend rate. Industrial production has declined each month since mid-1969 (pages 4 and 5). Production has been slug gish in both consumer goods and business equipment indus tries . Personal income increased at a reduced 5 per cent rate from August to January (pages 6 and 7), after rising at an 8.8 per cent rate in the previous year. Retail sales declined markedly from October to January (pages 6 and 7). The physical volume of goods sold, particularly consumer durables, declined even more precipitately. Housing starts declined in January to about the level for the whole year 1966. Wholesale prices of industrial commodities have continued to rise at about the 4.5 per cent rate which has prevailed since last summer (pages 13 and 14). Consumer prices have continued to rise at about the 6 per cent rate of the past year (pages 12 and 13). 2 TOT AL C I V I L I A N EMPI OYMFNT COMPOUNDED ANNUAL RATES OF C H A N G E TPPMINAi.____________________________________________________________________ I N I T I A L MONTH_______________________________________________________________________THOUSANDS MONTH DF PERSONS 6 - 6« 7 - 6 « 8-68 0-6 8 1 0 - 6 8 1 1 - 6 « 12 -6 8 1 - 6 9 7 - 6 0 3 - 6 9 4 - 6 9 5- 69 6 - 6 9 7 - 6 9 8 - 6 9 9 - 6 0 10 - 69 11- 69 1 2 - 6 9 7- 6« - 0.« 8- 6 R - 0.6 76,00* -0.5 75, 9 78 76,065 9—6 8 0.0 0.4 1 0- 6 « 0 .-* 0.7 1. 3 1.2 1 1 - 6? 1.1 1 .6 7.7 2.7 4. 1 1 7-6« 1.6 2. 1 2 .8 3.1 4.3 4.5 1- 6 9 7.3 7. 8 3.5 4. 1 5.0 5.5 6.4 6.8 7. 1 1. 4 76,143 76,400 76 , 683 77, 081 7-60 7.9 3.4 4. 1 4.7 5. 5 6.0 3- 6 9 7- 0 3.3 3.8 4.2 4. 8 5.0 5. 1 4.5 7. 0 3.2 3.5 3. 8 3.8 3.6 2.7 0.5 - 0.0 4-60 7.4 7.8 77,524 77.650 77 , 5 8 9 5- 69 1.« 7. 1 7.4 7.5 2.7 2.4 7.0 0.9 - 1.0 -2.5 -4.1 6-69 7. 7 7.5 7. 8 ?.9 3. 7 3.0 7.8 7. 1 0.8 0.5 1.2 6.7 7—f>0 ?.-* 7.5 7.8 3.0 3. 1 3.0 7. 8 7.7 1.3 1.1 1.8 4.8 3.0 8-69 1 7.6 2.8 3.0 3.2 3. 1 2.9 2.4 1.6 1 2.2 4.3 3. 1 3.3 7.5 2.7 2.9 2.8 2.6 1.5 1.4 1.9 3 .4 2.4 2.0 0.8 0- 60 7. 7 7.8 2 .2 7 7 , 321 77, 741 77 , 931 78, 1 42 78,194 1^-69 7. 3 7.6 7.8 7.9 3.0 2.9 7. 8 7.4 1.8 1.8 2 .2 3.5 2.7 2.7 2.3 3. 9 1 1- 6 9 ?. 1 7.5 7.7 7.8 7.0 2.« 2.6 2.3 1.7 1. 7 7. 1 3. 1 2.4 2.3 2.0 2 .6 1. 3 17 - 6 9 7. 3 1- 7 0 6-68 78, 5 28 7.5 7. 7 7. 8 7.9 2.8 2. 7 2.3 1 .9 1. 9 2.2 3.2 2 .6 2.5 2.3 2. 8 2.3 3.7 7.6 2 .8 7 . 0 ... 3.0 3.0 2.8 2.5 2 .1 2.2 2.5 3.4 2.9 2.9 2.8 3.3 3. 1 4.0 4.7 7-6« 8-68 10 -6 8 1 1 - 6 8 12 -6 8 1-60 2-69 3-69 4-69 5-69 6-69 7-69 8-69 9-69 10 - 69 1 1 - 6 9 12 - 6 9 9-68 INITIAL INITIAL TFRMIMAL MONTH 7-68 8-68 9-68 10-6 8 1 1-6 8 12 -68 1-69 2-69 3-69 78,737 79, 041 MONTH PAYROLL EMPLOYMENT COMPQUNDFD ANNUAL RATES OF CHANGE 6-68 78 , 4 4 5 PREPARED BY FEDERAL RESFRVE BANK OF S T .
