The 3,406 e s ta b lis h m e n ts w ith in scope of the s u r v e y (w ith 8 w o r k e r s o r m o r e ) had a c o m b in ed e m p lo y m e n t of 100, 184. T h is w as 10 p e r c e n t b e lo w the June 1962 l e v e l . The s m a ll p o rt a b le s a w m ills accounted f o r m o r e than h a lf of this e m p lo y m e n t d e c r e a s e . M i l l s p r i m a r i l y en g a g e d in m an u factu rin g h a rd w o o d d im e n s io n lu m b e r and f l o o r i n g accounted f o r a p p r o x im a t e ly o n e - fif th of the w o r k e r s , and s e p a r a t e planing m i l l s f o r l e s s than one-tenth of the total. In the Southeast (the only r e g io n f o r w h ic h c o m p a r is o n can be m a d e ), h o w e v e r , w o r k e r s in p o r t a b le m i l l s a v e r a g e d 3 cents an hour m o r e than those in s t a tio n a r y m i l l s . A p p r o x i m a t e l y o n e -h a lf of the 100, 184 w o r k e r s c o v e r e d b y the s u r v e y e a r n e d $1.25 but le s s than $1.30 an hour (tab le 2). Job a v e r a g e s in the Southwest, h o w e v e r , f r e q u e n t ly eq u aled o r e x c e e d e d those in the B o r d e r States. The h ig h e st a v e r a g e ea r n in g s e x c e e d e d the lo w e s t a v e r a g e b y le s s than 5 p e r c e n t in 12 of the 29 occupations and b y 5 to 10 p e r c e n t j.n 10. A m o n g the oth er s e v e n jo b s , the h ig h e s t e x c e e d e d the lo w e s t a v e r a g e b y amounts ran gin g f r o m 12 to 19 p e r c e n t. 4 The Federal minimum wage for workers in manufacturing establishments engaged in interstate commerce was raised to $1. 25 an hour on Sept. 3, 1963.
