Preface
This bulletin summarizes the results of a Bureau
of Labor Statistics survey of wages and supplementary
benefits in the southern sawmills and planing m ills industry
in October 1965.

p rod u c tio n and r e la t e d w o r k e r s in the N a t io n 's s a w m ills and planing m i l l s in
O c t o b e r 1965. The 3,406 e s ta b lis h m e n ts w ith in scope of the s u r v e y (w ith 8 w o r k e r s
o r m o r e ) had a c o m b in ed e m p lo y m e n t of 100, 184.

b e tw e e n m i l l s p r i m a r i l y p r o c e s s in g hardw ood and those p r o c e s s in g softw ood. 3
H a rd w o o d m i l l s e m p lo y e d n e a r l y t h r e e - f o u r t h s o f the w o r k e r s in the B o r d e r States
r e g io n . In the Southwest, so ftw o o d m i l l s accounted f o r n e a r l y t h r e e - f i f t h s o f the
w o r k e r s ; in the Southeast, they e m p lo y e d o v e r h a lf the w o r k e r s .

In the Southeast (the only r e g io n f o r w h ic h c o m p a r is o n can be
m a d e ), h o w e v e r , w o r k e r s in p o r t a b le m i l l s a v e r a g e d 3 cents an hour m o r e than
those in s t a tio n a r y m i l l s .
A p p r o x i m a t e l y o n e -h a lf of the 100, 184 w o r k e r s c o v e r e d b y the s u r v e y
e a r n e d $1.25 but le s s than $1.30 an hour (tab le 2). V i r t u a l l y a l l of th es e w o r k e r s
w e r e r e p o r t e d as e a rn in g e x a c t ly $1.25 an hour, the F e d e r a l m in im u m w a g e at
the t im e of the s u r v e y . 4* The p r o p o r t io n of w o r k e r s e a r n in g le s s than $1.30 an
hour w a s about t h r e e - f i f t h s in the Southeast, c o m p a r e d w ith t w o - f ift h s in the
other tw o r e g io n s .

h o w e v e r , f r e q u e n t ly eq u aled o r e x c e e d e d those in the B o r d e r States. The h ig h e st
a v e r a g e ea r n in g s e x c e e d e d the lo w e s t a v e r a g e b y le s s than 5 p e r c e n t in 12 of
the 29 occupations and b y 5 to 10 p e r c e n t j.n 10.
A m o n g the oth er s e v e n jo b s ,
the h ig h e s t e x c e e d e d the lo w e s t a v e r a g e b y amounts ran gin g f r o m 12 to 19 p e r c e n t.
