P r e fa c e

This study of the accident and sickness benefit
features of health and insurance plans under collective
bargaining, based on an analysis of 300 selected plans,
is the first in a planned series of bulletins dealing sepa
rately with the various components of health and in su r
ance plans. A s a whole, this se rie s w ill bring up to
date the Bureau of Labor Statistics* ea rlier Analysis of
Health and Insurance Plans Under C ollective Bargaining,
Late 1955 (BLS Bull. 1221, 1957).
Each of the 300 plans analyzed covered at least
1, 000 w ork ers. In total, the selected plans provided p ro
tection to alm ost 5 m illion w ork ers, or about tw o-fifths of
the estim ated coverage of all health and insurance plans
under collectiv e bargaining.
This study was conducted and the report was p r e
pared in the Bureau*s D ivision of Wages and Industrial
Relations by Dorothy Kittner Greene and Harry E, Davis,
under the direction of Joseph W. B loch.
