*—New Year's Day this year occurred in the week ending January 7 whereas last
year it was in the week ending January 2, I960. The week of January 7, 1961,
therefore, had„one less trading day than the corresponding week last year.
**-The large percentage changes shown for this week are due mainly to the difference in timing of Christmas 1959 and i960. Christmas in 1959 fell on Friday whereas in I960 it was on Sunday. Therefore, the week ending Dec. 24, i960 had the
advantage since it included 6 pre-Christmas shopping days, while the 1959 week
ending Dec. 26j3ontained 4 pre-Christmas shopping days, 1 holiday and 1 postChristmas shopping day.
Note:—Cumulative year-to-date comparisons for 1961 over i960 will be published
effective the week ending February 4, 1961.
l/ For description and weekly indexes for the period January 1937 to March 1958
see Federal Reserve Bulletin for April 1958, pp. 412-421.
Weekly indexes at the district and city levels are published by several of
the Federal Reserve Banks.
