FEDERAL statistical RESERVE release For immediate release January 9, 1979 H.8 Release to be Revised The H.8 balance sheet will be revised after this issue. The weekly balance sheet will be based on revised reporting from banks and revised procedures for deriving estimates for all commercial banks. The asset and. liability detail also will be changed in some respects. Beginning with the release for January 3, U.S. branches of foreign banks will be excluded from the weekly estimates which will represent only domestically chartered commercial banks. However, these narrower weekly estimates of U.S. banking assets and liabilities will be supplemented on a monthly basis by broader measures that will include data for U.S. branches, agencies, and investment company subsidiaries of foreign banks as well as Edge Act corporations engaged in commercial banking activities. This expanded coverage of the banking system takes account of the increasing importance of the internationally oriented institutions in the U.S. banking sys tern. Back data reflecting this broader coverage for recent years will be made available by the Board.
