Debt: T h e debt a g g re g a te is the outstanding credit m arket debt of the dom estic nonfinancial sectors — the fed e ra l secto r (U .S . g o v e rn m e n t, not including g o v e rn m e n tspo nso red e nterp rises or fed e ra lly related m ortgage pools) and the non fed eral sectors (state and local g overn m en ts, hou seh old s and nonprofit o rg an izatio n s, nonfinancial
c o rpo rate and nonfarm non co rp orate businesses, and farm s). N o n fe d e ra l debt consists of m o rtgages, ta x -e x e m p t a n d c o rpo rate bonds, c o n s u m e r credit, b an k loans,
c o m m ercial paper, and o th er loans. T h e data, which are derived from the F ed e ra l R e s e rv e B o ard ’s flow of funds accounts, a re b re a k -a d ju s te d (th at is, discontinuities in the
d ata h av e b een sm o oth ed into the series) and m onth -averag ed (that is, the d ata h ave b ee n derived by av e ra g in g a d ja c e n t m o n th -e n d levels). T h e p resentatio n of the debt
d ata in this re le a s e differ, therefore, from the quarterly flow of funds statistics con tain ed in the F ed e ra l R e s e rv e re le a s e s Z .7 a n d Z .1 . In th o s e re le a s e s , p ub lish ed levels of
credit m arket debt are m e a s u re d on a quarter-end basis and contain discontinuities.
