BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) September 5, 1951 CONDITION OF TOEKLY REPORTING MEMBER B A M S IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended August 29$ An increase of $681,000,000 in demand deposits adjusted, and decreases of $350*000,000 in United States Government deposits and $4.15,000,000 ir. demand deposits credited to domestic banks* Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased in six districts and decreased in the other six, with a net decrease of $1,000,000 at all reporting member banks; the largest increase was $12,000,000 in the San Francisco District and the largest decrease -mas $9,000,000 in the Atlanta District. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government securities increased $59,000,000, largely in New York City* Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $30,000,000 in the San Francisco District, $27,000,000 in New York City, $21,000,000 in the Boston District, and a total of $123,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of United States Government bonds increased $74,000,000 in New York City and $57»000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of "other securities" increased $61,000,000* Demand deposits adjusted increased in all but one district; the principal increases were $301,000,000 in New York City, $130,000,000 in the Chicago District, and $129,000,000 in the San Francisco District. Time deposits increased $59,000,000* United States Government deposits decreased in all districts* Demand deposits credited to domestic banks decreased $122,000,000 in New York City, $75,000,000 in the Chicago District, and $57,000,000 in the Kansas City District. Borrowings increased $75,000*000 in New York City and $34,000,000 in the Chicago District, and they decreased $79,000,000 in the San Francisco District; the net increase at all reporting member banks was $51,000,000.
