Form FR-284 STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS For immediate release Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System September 5, 1939 Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks in 101 Leading Cities The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in 101 leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended August 30* A decrease of $31,000,000 in loans to brokers and dealers in securities, and increases of $58,000,000 in commercial, industrial and agricultural loans, $131,000,000 in reserve balances with Federal Reserve banks, and $261,000,000 in demand deposits—adjusted. Commercial, industrial and agricultural loans increased $4-9,000,000 in New York City and $58,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Loans to brokers and dealers in securities declined $22,000,000 in New York City and $31,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of United States Treasury bills increased $25,000,000 in the Chicago district and $8,000,000 at all reporting member banks, and declined $14,000,000 in New York City, Holdings of Treasury notes increased $11,000,000 in the Richmond district, $6,000,000 in Hew York City, and $22,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of United States Government bonds declined $24,000,000 in New York City, and increased $10,000,000 in the San Francisco district and $2,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of obligations guaranteed by the United States Government increased $6,000,000 in New York City and $12,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of "Other securities" increased $35,000,000 in New York City and $27,000,000 at all reporting member banks, and declined $11,000,000 in the San Francisco district. Demand deposits-adjusted increased $244,000,000 in New York City, $13,000,000 in the Chicago district, $11,000,000 in the Cleveland district, and $261,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Deporits credited to domestic banks declined $12,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Deposits credited to foreign banks increased $22,000,000 in New York City and $14,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks amounted to $4,000,000 on August 30.
