FEDERAL statistical RESERVE release For immediate release September 30, 1964 H.4.2 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended September 23: a decrease of $453 million in loans adjusted, increases of $17 million in holdings of U. S. Government securities, and $62$ million in reserves with Federal Reserve Banks, a decrease of $2,292 million in demand deposits adjusted, an increase of $2,843 million in U. 8. Government demand deposits, a decrease of $1,530 million in demand deposits credited to domestic commercial banks and an increase of $324 million in time and savings deposits. Commercial and industrial loans decreased in nine districts and a net of $91 million; during the comparable week a year ago these loans increased $80 million. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government securities decreased $138 million, and their loans for purchasing or carrying "other" securities decreased $5 million. Loans to sales and personal financing institutions decreased $243 million and loans to "other" nonbank financial institutions decreased $13 million, as compared with a decrease of $269 million and an increase of $68 million, respectively, during the similar week in 1963. Real estate loans increased $51 million. "Other" loans decreased $20 million. Holdings of Treasury bills by weekly reporting member banks increased $66 million and the combined total of Treasury notes and U. S. Government bonds decreased $49 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased in all districts including decreases of $858 million in New York City, $481 million in the Chicago District, $268 million in the San Francisco District and $173 million in the Cleveland District. Savings deposits increased $66 million and "other" time deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations decreased $235 million. Borrowings of weekly reporting member banks from Federal Reserve p«nVg increased $623 million but borrowings from others decreased $960 million. Loans to domestic commercial banks decreased $650 million.
