CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading c i t i e s
shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week aided September 19: Increases
of $ll*2 million in loans adjusted and $278 million in reserve balances with Federal
Reserve Banks, decreases of $162 million in holdings of United States Government
s e c u r i t i e s and $195 million i n demand deposits credited to domestic banks, and i n creases of $131 million in demand deposits adjusted and $398 million in United
States Government d e p o s i t s .
Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l loans increased in a l l but two d i s t r i c t s and a t o t a l
of $136 million a t a l l reporting member banks; the p r i n c i p a l increases were $69 million in New York City, $26 million in Chicago, and $ll* million in the S t . Louis
D i s t r i c t . Changes according to industry appear in another press r e l e a s e . Loans to
brokers and dealers f o r purchasing o r carrying United States Government and other
s e c u r i t i e s increased $61 m i l l i o n . "Other" loans decreased $70 m i l l i o n .
Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased $185 million, of which $53 million was in
New York City and $1*8 million i n t h e San Francisco D i s t r i c t . Holdings of Treasury
c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness and of Treasury notes decreased $58 million and $75
million, r e s p e c t i v e l y . Holdings of United States Government bonds decreased $67
million in New York City, $1*5 million in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , and a t o t a l
of $2ll* million a t a l l reporting member banks.
Demand deposits adjusted increased $3b3 million in the New York D i s t r i c t and
$69 million in the San Francisco D i s t r i c t , but they decreased $226 million in the
Chicago D i s t r i c t , Time deposits decreased $37 m i l l i o n ,
Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $11*3 million and borrowings
from others decreased $1*2 m i l l i o n . Loans to banks decreased $21 m i l l i o n .
