STATEMENT FOR THE PRESS Form FR—284 For 1; .,'iedlate r e l e a s e Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System September 12, 1938 Condition of Weekly Reporting Member Banks i n 101 Leading C i t i e s The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks i n 101 leading c i t i e s shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended September 7$ Decreases of $20,000,000 i n loans t o brokers and dealers i n s e c u r i t i e s and $121,000,000 i n demand d e p o s i t s - a d j u s t e d , and increases of $71,000,000 i n reserve balances with Federal Reserve banks and $147,000,000 i n deposits credited t o domestic banks# Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l and a g r i c u l t u r a l loans declined $13,000,000 i n New York City, but increased somewhat i n most of the d i s t r i c t s , a l l reporting member banks showing a net increase of $2,000,000 f o r the week. Loans t o brokers and dealers i n s e c u r i t i e s declined $17,000,000 i n New York City and $20,000,000 at a l l r e p o r t ing member banks. Holdings of United States Government d i r e c t obligations declined $7,000,000 i n New York City, and increased $8,000,000 i n the Chicago d i s t r i c t and $3,000,000 at a l l reporting member banks* Holdings of obligations f u l l y guaranteed by t h e United S t a t e s Government showed no net change for the week. Holdings of "Other s e c u r i t i e s " increased $7,000,000. Demand deposits—adjusted increased $13,000,000 i n the Boston d i s t r i c t and declined i n most of the other d i s t r i c t s , the p r i n c i p a l decreases being $65,000,000 i n New York City, $32,000,000 i n the Chicago d i s t r i c t , $18,000,000 i n the San Francisco d i s t r i c t and $3.4,000,000 i n the Cleveland d i s t r i c t , and the net decline being $121,000,000. Time deposits increased $7,000,000. Government deposits declined $4,000,000. Deposits c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks increased i n nearly a l l d i s t r i c t s , the p r i n c i p a l increases being $35,000,000 i n New York City, $19,000,000 i n t h e Chicago d i s t r i c t , $16,000,000 i n the Richmond d i s t r i c t , $15,000,000 i n the Kansas City d i s t r i c t and $12,000,000 each i n the Cleveland and Dallas d i s t r i c t s , and t h e aggregate increase being $1-47,000,000.
