CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES F u r t h e r i n c r e a s e s of ^87,000,000 i n loans and i n v e s t m e n t s , a s a g a i n s t d e c r e a s e s of $31,000,000 i n n e t demand d e p o s i t s and of $38,000,000 i n accommodation a t the Federal reserve b a n k s , are shown i n the F e d e r a l Reserve B o a r d s weekly c o n s o l i d a t e d statement of c o n d i t i o n on October 22 of member banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s . Loans on U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s i n c r e a s e d by $2,000,000 d u r i n g the week and loans on c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s - by $85,000,000, while "All o t h e r , " l a r g e l y commerf i a l , loans and d i s c o u n t s went down $30,000,000. Holdings of a l l c l a s s e s o.f i n vestments were h i g h e r t h a n a week ago, United State's bonds - by $8,000,000, Treasury n o t e s - by $12,000,000, and c e r t i f i c a t e s of i n d e b t e d n e s s and c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s by $5,000,000 e a c h . T o t a l loans and d i s c o u n t s of the New York City members i n c r e a s e d by $57 >000,000, i n c r e a s e s of $5,000,000 i n l o a n s on U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s and of $78,000,000 i n loans on c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s being o f f s e t i n p a r t by a d e c r e a s e of $26,000,000 i n "All o t h e r " l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s . Investments of t h e s e banks i n U. S. s e c u r i t i e s went up $18,000,000, while t h e i r h o l d i n g s of c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s declined by $3,000,000. Net demand d e p o s i t s were $31,000,000 l e s s t h a n l a s t week, i n c r e a s e s of <56,000,000 i n t h e New York d i s t r i c t and of $6,000,000 i n the P h i l a d e l p h i a d i s t r i c t being more than o f f s e t by d e c l i n e s i n m o s t of the o t h e r d i s t r i c t s , p r i n c i p a l l y Cnic-ago, San F r a n c i s c o , Cleveland and A t l a n t a . Time d e p o s i t s of a l l r e p o r t i n g members [went up $11,000,000 and those of the New York C i t y members $2,000,000. U. S.
