CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES

The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities
shows the following principal changes for the week ended October 23• Decreases
of 1650 million in loans adjusted, $425 million in U, S. Government deposits, and
51,029 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks, and an increase of
$609 million in demand deposits adjusted.
Commercial and industrial loans decreased in most districts and a total of
$300 million at all reporting member banks; the principal decreases were $147 million in New York City, $44 million in Chicago, $27 million in the San Francisco
District, $23 million in the Boston District, $21 million in the Philadelphia District, and $17 million in the Minneapolis District. Changes according to industry
appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or
carrying U, S. Government and other securities decreased $333 million.
Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness decreased $29 million.
Holdings of Treasury notes increased $40 million in the San Francisco District but
decreased in most of the other districts; at all reporting member banks, the net
increase was $10 million. Holdings of U. S. Government bonds decreased $41 million in the San Francisco District and a total of $65 million at all reporting
momber banks.
Demand deposits adjusted increased $210 million in New York City, $92 million
in the Cleveland District, $84 million in the Chicago District, and $82 million in
the Boston District, and by smaller amounts in most of the other districts.
Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks increased $24 million and borrowings
from others increased $114 million. Loans to banks increased $95 million.
