CONDITION OF MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES.
Heavy Government o p e r a t i o n s i n connection w i t h the redemption
and issuance of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s and the payment of semi-annual
i n t e r e s t on t h e 4 t h L i b e r t y bonds, a l s o the r e t i r e m e n t of the AngloFrench bonds, account l a r g e l y f o r the p r i n c i p a l chan fa es i n the cond i t i o n on October 15 of 822 member banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s . App a r e n t l y in connection with the l a t t e r o p e r a t i o n and the new f i n a n c ing of the week a c o n s i d e r a b l e i n c r e a s e i n l o a n s supported by
c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s i s seen, Demand d e p o s i t s show the u n u s u a l l y
l a r g e i n c r e a s e f o r the week of 260.7 m i l l i o n s , t h i s i n c r e a s e r e p r e s e n t i n g i n p a r t t r a n s f e r s of d e p o s i t c r e d i t s from Government to
i n d i v i d u a l account, d e p o s i t s of funds r e c e i v e d i n payment of matured
home and f o r e i g n Government o b l i g a t i o n s , a l s o a d d i t i o n a l c r e d i t s to
d e p o s i t account g r a n t e d to borrowers on c o r p o r a t e s e c u r i t i e s .
Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e h o l d i n g s show an i n c r e a s e f o r t h e week of
about 44 m i l l i o n s , of which 9*4 m i l l i o n s r e p r e s e n t s the i n c r e a s e f o r
t h e member banks i n New York C i t y . Holdings of other Government
s e c u r i t i e s , i n c l u d i n g L i b e r t y bonds and V i c t o r y n o t e s show but nominal
changes. Loans secured by Government o b l i g a t i o n s d e c l i n e d 1 3 . 2 mill i o n s ( 6 , 2 m i l l i o n s in New York C i t y ) , while l o a n s supported by
c o r p o r a t e stocks and bonds show an i n c r e a s e of "Jl-1 m i l l i o n s , mainly
i n New York C i t y . Other l o a n s and-investments, composed l a r g e l y of
commercial l o a n s and d i s c o u n t s , f o r the f i r s t time since May 21 of
the p r e s e n t y e a r , show a s l i g h t r e d u c t i o n . ^ A s ^ ^ r e g ^ ^ g f the above
changes i n the l e a d i n g a s s e t s t o t a l loans/snow an i n c r e a s e f o r the
week of 95*4 m i l l i o n s . For the New York C i t y member banks an i n c r e a s e under t h i s head of 3^*3 m i l l i o n s i s n o t e d , Accommodation of
r e p o r t i n g banks a t the Federal Reserve Banks, as shown on t h e books
of the l a t t e r , shows a small d e c l i n e from about 2,250 to 2,248-9
m i l l i o n s , c o n s t i t u t i n g about 13 per cent of the banks' t o t a l l o a n s
and investments, compared w i t h 13,1 per cent on t h e p r e c e d i n g F r i d a y .
For the New York City banks a s l i g h t i n c r e a s e under t h i s head from
846,3 to 848.3 m i l l i o n s i s shown, l e a v i n g t h e r a t i o of accommodation
a t the Federal Reserve Bank unchanged a t 1 4 . 6 p e r c e n t .
Government d e p o s i t s a t a l l r e p o r t i n g banks show a r e d u c t i o n of
58,7 m i l l i o n s , while other demand d e p o s i t s ( n e t ) went up 260.7 m i l l i o n s and time d e p o s i t s - 1 2 . 1 million's. For the New York C i t y
banks a r e d u c t i o n of 65.3 m i l l i o n s in Government d e p o s i t s and i n creases of 120,4 m i l l i o n s i n other demand d e p o s i t s and of about 11
m i l l i o n s i n time d e p o s i t s a r e shown.
Reserve b a l a n c e s of a l l r e p o r t i n g . i n s t i t u t i o n s , i n accordance with
the l a r g e i n c r e a s e in demand d e p o s i t s , i n c r e a s e d by 37*4 m i l l i o n s , the
i n c r e a s e i n New York City being, 11.7 m i l l i o n s . Cash in v a u l t shows a
gain f o r the week of 4 . 6 m i l l i o n s , of which l e s s t h a n one m i l l i o n
r e p r e s e n t s the g a i n of the New York City banks.
