STATEMENT FOB THE PRESS St. 5946 Federal Reserve Board, October 22, ig2S, COKDITICB OF HESER BAIKS IK LEA.DHG CITIES The federal Reserve Board's condition statement of 632 reporting member tanks in leading c i t i e s as of October 17 shows increases f o r the week of $112,000,000 in investments, including $102,000,000 in Government s e c u r i t i e s , of $37,000,000 in loans and discounts, of $125,000,000 in Government deposits, of $94,000,000 in net demand deposits, and of $15,000,000 in time deposits, and a decline of • >50,000,000 in borrowings from the Federal reserve banks. Loans on stocks and bonds, including United States Government obligations, were Y 49,000,000 above the October 10 t o t a l , increases of $54,000,000 and ^10,000,000, respectively, being shown f o r the Hew York and Boston d i s t r i c t s and a decrease of ^10^000,000 f o r the Cleveland d i s t r i c t . "All other" loans and d i s counts, which at a l l reporting banks - e r e $12,000,000 below the October 10 t o t a l , declined v52,000,000 at reporting banks in the Hew York d i s t r i c t and increased $13,000,000 in the Chicago d i s t r i c t , $7,000,000 in the Boston d i s t r i c t , and ,'6,000,000 each in the Atlanta and Dallas d i s t r i c t s . For immediate release Holdings of Government s e c u r i t i e s , in connection with the recent f l o t a t i o n of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s , increased $102,000,000, most of the d i s t r i c t s reporting substantial increases as compared with the preceding v/eelc. Holdings of other bonds, stocks and s e c u r i t i e s increased 59,000,000 in the Her; York d i s t r i c t and $10,000,000 at a l l reporting "banks. Net demand deposits, which at a l l reporting "banks were $9^,000,000 above the October 10 t o t a l , increased $23,000,000 each in the Chicago and Boston d i s t r i c t s , 921,000, uOO in the Her/ York d i s t r i c t , ^16,000,000 in the San Francisco d i s t r i c t , ^>9,000,000 in the Philadelphia d i s t r i c t , and y8,000,000 in the Richmond d i s t r i c t , and declined yf,000,000 in the Kansas City d i s t r i c t . An increase of $27,000,000 in time deposits in the }Tew York d i s t r i c t was partly o f f s e t by a decline of *7.000,000 in the Chicago d i s t r i c t , a l l reporting banks showing a net increase of #15,000,000. All d i s t r i c t s participated in the increase of J125,000,000 in Government deposits. The principal changes in borrowings from Federal reserve banks f o r the week were declines of ^38,000,000 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Hew York, s>24,000,000 at Philadelphia, and <,'>20,000,000 at Boston, and increases of $16,000,000 at Chicago, $6,000,000 at Kansas City and $5,000,000 each at St. Louis and Minneapolis.
