H.4,2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) October 16, 1957 CONDITION OF MEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended October 9% Decreases of 1335 million in loans adjusted, $330 million in holdings of U. S, Government securities, $157 million in reserve balances with Federal Reserve Banks, and #1,254 million in U. S, Government deposits; and an increase of $329 million in demand deposits adjusted. Commercial and industrial loans decreased in all but one district and a total of $181 million at all reporting member banks; the principal decreases were $125 million in New York City, $20 million in the Cleveland District, and $13 million in the Chicago District outside of Chicago. Changes according to industry appear in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying U. S. Government and other securities decreased $100 million, '•Other11 loans decreased $44 million. Holdings of all categories of U, S, Government securities decreased: Treasury bills $136 million, Treasury certificates of indebtedness $63 million, Treasury notes $75 million, and U. S, Government bonds $56 million. Demand deposits adjusted increased $174 million in New York City, $54 million in the San Francisco District, $42 million in the Philadelphia District, and $39 million in the Richmond District, Time deposits increased $56 million, of which $33 million was in deposits of individuals, partnerships, and corporations in the San Francisco District, Demand deposits credited to domestic banks increased $106 million. . Borrowings from Federal Reserve Banks decreased $13 million and borrowings from others decreased $98 million.
