H.4.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) October 15# 1952 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended October 8: Increases of $1,472 million in holdings of Treasury bills, $1,065 million in United States Government deposits, $324 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks, and $312 million in borrowings. Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased in all but two districts and a total of $137 million; the principal changes were increases of $54 million in New York City, $26 million in the Chicago District, $19 million in the St. Louis District, and $16 million in the Dallas District. Changes according to industry are available in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying securities increased $131 million. Loans to banks decreased $150 million. Holdings of Treasury bills increased substantially in all districts, reflecting the sale of a new issue of tax anticipation bills. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness decreased in all districts and a total of $8l million. Holdings of Treasury notes increased $24 million and holdings of United States Government bonds decreased $18 million. Holdings of "other securities" decreased $21 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $132 million; the principal changes were decreases of $92 million in the New York District and $82 million in Chicago, and increases of $33 million in the Richmond District and $24 million in the Boston District. Time deposits increased $6l million. United States Government deposits increased in all districts. Demand deposits credited to domestic banks increased in all but one district. Borrowings increased $120 million in Chicago and $108 million in New York City.
