. • * BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) October 1, 1952 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER B A M S IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended September 24: Decreases of $947 million in demand deposits adjusted and $646 million in demand deposits credited to domestic banks, and an increase of $838 million in United States Government deposits. Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased in all but one district and a total of $90 million at all reporting member banks; the principal increases were $23 million in New York City, $15 million in the Philadelphia District, $14 million in the St. Louis District, and $13 million in the Chicago District. Changes according to industry are available in another press release. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government and other securities decreased $155 million. Loans to banks decreased $173 million. "Other loans" increased $17 million, largely in the San Francisco District. Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $68 million in Chicago and a total of $211 million at all reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury notes decreased $24 million. Holdings of "other securities" decreased $35 million. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $510 million in the New York District, $112 million in the Cleveland District, $65 million in the Kansas City District, $6l million in the Atlanta District, and $54 million in the San Francisco District, Time deposits increased $43 million. United States Government deposits increased in all but one district, and demand deposits credited to domestic banks decreased in all districts. Borrowings decreased $145 million in New York City and $74 million in the San Francisco District, and they increased $63 million in the Kansas City District; the net decrease at all reporting member banks was $170 million.
