BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM g,4.2 (For Immediate Release) November 9, 1949 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The condition statement of weekly reporting member banks in leading cities shows the following principal changes for the week ended November 2: An increase of $400,000,000 in loans, decreases of $437,000,000 in holdings of United States Government securities and $481,000,000 in demand deposits adjusted, and an increase of $514,000,000 in borrowings. Commercial, industrial, and agricultural loans increased $17,000,000 in the San Francisco District, $15,000,000 in New York City, and $13,000,000 in the Dallas District, and decreased $16,000,000 in the Chicago District and $11,000,000 in the Cleveland District; the net increase at all reporting member banks was $19,000,000. Loans to brokers and dealers for purchasing or carrying United States Government and other securities increased $338,000,000, largely in New York City. "Other loans increased $32,000,000. Holdings of Treasury bills decreased $251,000,000 in New York City and a total of $365,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Holdings of Treasury certificates of indebtedness decreased $105,000,000, of which $76,000,000 was in New York City. Holdings of United States Government bonds increased $33,000,000. Holdings of "other securities»decreased $39,000,000 in New York City and a total of $54,000,000 at all reporting member banks. Demand deposits adjusted decreased $288,000,000 in New York City, $102,000,000 in the Chicago District, and by smaller amounts in nearly all of the other districts. United States Government deposits decreased $133,000,000. Demand deposits credited to domestic banks and to foreign banks increased $168,000,000 and $61,000,000, respectively. Borrowings increased $422,000,000 in New York City and $105,000,000 in Chicago.
