H»li.2 BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF THE FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM (For Immediate Release) November 2, 1955 CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES The c o n d i t i o n statement of weekly r e p o r t i n g member banks i n l e a d i n g c i t i e s shows the following p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended October 26: An i n c r e a s e of $791* m i l l i o n i n demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d and decreases of $351 m i l l i o n i n United S t a t e s Government d e p o s i t s and $396 m i l l i o n i n demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic banks. Commercial, i n d u s t r i a l , and a g r i c u l t u r a l l o a n s i n c r e a s e d i n seven d i s t r i c t s , including $31 m i l l i o n i n t h e San Francisco D i s t r i c t , but decreased i n t h e o t h e r s ; t h e net r e s u l t was an i n c r e a s e of $1*2 m i l l i o n a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks. Changes according t o i n d u s t r y appear i n another p r e s s r e l e a s e . Loans t o brokers and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing or carrying United S t a t e s Government and o t h e r s e c u r i t i e s decreased $1*9 m i l l i o n . "Other" loans i n c re ase d $53 m i l l i o n . Holdings of Treasury b i l l s increased $93 m i l l i o n i n New York City and decreased i n most of the d i s t r i c t s ; t h e n e t r e s u l t was an i n c r e a s e of $32 m i l l i o n a t a l l r e p o r t i n g member banks. Holdings of Treasury c e r t i f i c a t e s of indebtedness decreased $3U m i l l i o n . Holdings of " o t h e r " s e c u r i t i e s decreased $1*9 m i l l i o n . Demand d e p o s i t s a d j u s t e d i n c r e a s e d $323 m i l l i o n i n New York City, $250 m i l l i o n i n the Chicago D i s t r i c t , $1*7 m i l l i o n i n t h e P h i l a d e l p h i a D i s t r i c t , $1*3 m i l l i o n i n t h e Cleveland D i s t r i c t , and by smaller amounts i n a l l but one of the o t h e r d i s t r i c t s .
